This mid‑century modern ranch in Fox Point, Wisconsin was purchased by homeowners eager to restore the warmth and character the home once had. They wanted the landscape to reflect that same spirit and reached out to us because of our expertise in mid‑century landscape design. The home’s dramatic roofline became the inspiration for the angled theme carried throughout both the hardscaping and planting beds.
Our clients were enthusiastic about reducing the amount of lawn in the front yard and asked us to prioritize pollinator‑friendly plantings. The new concrete front walk incorporates bluestone runnels aligned with the home’s roof beams, creating a striking visual connection and a more welcoming approach to the future half‑circle driveway. Linear groupings of flowering shrubs, boxwoods, and ornamental grasses emphasize the home’s architectural lines, while naturalized perennials offer habitat for bees and butterflies.
In the backyard, the design works thoughtfully around the existing concrete patios and walkways. Select areas of concrete were removed to introduce new planting beds that soften the transition between the home and the landscape. To balance the presence of the existing arborvitae hedge, we created a colorful mixed border of perennials, ornamental grasses, and flowering shrubs, using the hedge as a green backdrop. Low‑voltage lighting completes the design and enhances the landscape’s ambiance after sunset.
