Mid-Century Landscape Makeover - Whitefish Bay, WI

The interior of our client's home had been recently remodeled with modern updates while keeping it's mid-century vibe intact. They knew the outside needed a complete makeover to bring it up to the level of the inside. Knowing our specialty was mid-century landscapes, they reached out to have a complete master plan done for their property. Initially our client wanted to focus on a new patio, but we recommended that the failing, stamped concrete front walk and driveway be replaced too.

For the front yard, we designed a new concrete walkway with bluestone detailing. The walk has an expanded area where it meets the driveway, creating an "outdoor foyer". All new plant beds were designed with a mixture of evergreens, flowering shrubs and long blooming perennials. A bluestone stepper path connects the front porch to the patio and backyard.

The design for the backyard included an expanded, new concrete patio with bluestone details. The patio has areas for dining, lounging and grilling. We designed a new plant bed that wraps around the perimeter of the backyard, downplaying the existing fence. The curve of the bed makes the backyard feel larger than it is. Our clients have a mid-century chiminea, so we designed a simple circle of bluestone that is bisected by the plant bed arc. Seating for a fire would be in the lawn. The backyard plant palette has some plants repeated from the front, with new ones added for the shadier conditions of the backyard. Low-voltage landscape lighting completes the design.
