Mid-Century Modern Front Landscape - Evansville, IN

This mid‑century landscape redesign in Evansville, Indiana draws inspiration from the home’s dramatic roofline to create a cohesive, architecture‑driven outdoor environment. Inlaid steppers, slate‑chip gravel gardens, angled planting beds, and a clean, modern plant palette guide visitors intuitively through the property while reinforcing the home’s bold geometry. Designed virtually, this project integrates seamlessly into the client’s full home makeover.

After seeing our work online, our client reached out when she couldn’t find any Indiana landscape firms familiar with authentic mid‑century design. She wanted the landscape to play a key role in the total transformation of her home. As with many of our virtual projects, she completed the site measurements and photography, allowing us to design remotely. The home’s dramatic roofline became the guiding inspiration for the geometry and layout of the new landscape.

One of the primary challenges was directing visitors to the front door, which is tucked inside the carport. Our solution was a path of inlaid concrete or stone steppers placed along the edge of the new driveway. To make each stepper visually distinct, we designed cut‑outs around them filled with dry‑laid beach pebbles—creating a crisp, modern detail that stands out against the drive. Another key feature is the “zen” gravel garden positioned in front of the home’s massive chimney, the other dominant architectural element. This slate‑chip bed is echoed again near the street to reinforce the design language.

The planting beds throughout the property are angled to mirror the roofline, even in smaller areas farther from the house. Plant groupings are arranged in straight or angled lines to emphasize the home’s strong architectural geometry. The plant palette includes a mix of evergreens, flowering shrubs, and long‑blooming perennials, with slate chip mulch repeated beneath the deep roof overhangs for continuity. Additional steppers form a secondary path leading down the side of the home to the porch door.

Designed by James Drzewiecki, CPLD, and landscape designer Hannah Paulson, this project brings a clean, modern, mid‑century sensibility to the property—perfectly aligned with the home’s architectural makeover.
