Set within Rush Creek Village in Worthington, Ohio—a Usonian‑style community inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and designed by Ted van Fossen—this landscape redesign updates a mid‑century home for modern living while honoring its distinctive architecture. Expanded patio spaces, bluestone accents, thoughtful plantings, and subtle lighting create a cohesive outdoor environment that feels both contemporary and true to the home’s heritage. Installation is scheduled for 2024.
Our clients wanted a landscape that respected the home’s unique architectural character while updating the outdoor spaces for modern day living. After they removed a large dying tree near the original patio, we were given the opportunity to expand the patio footprint and design new steps leading down to an enlarged lower patio.
Concrete was selected as the primary paving material for its clean, modern look, with “highlights” of bluestone incorporated throughout to add richness and visual interest. The main patio was designed around two key features: a new outdoor fireplace—echoing the one inside the home—and a swim spa, both of which anchor the space and support year‑round use.
New planting beds wrap the patio areas, complemented by privacy plantings along the lot line to create a more intimate outdoor experience. At the driveway entrance, we replaced the original overgrown junipers with fresh landscaping that better suits the home’s architecture. On the back side of the house, where a grade change limits available space, we designed simple, low‑maintenance plantings to work alongside the timber retaining walls and steps previously installed by the client.
Low‑voltage landscape lighting completes the design, enhancing nighttime ambiance and extending the usability of the outdoor spaces.
