Donald Grieb Inspired Mid-Century Modern Landscape - Glendale, WI

This master plan for a Donald Grieb–designed Mid‑Century Modern home in Glendale, Wisconsin updates the landscape while preserving the architectural character of the property. Clean geometry, Asian‑inspired elements, expanded outdoor living spaces, and a cohesive planting palette create a modern yet timeless environment that complements the home’s distinctive angles. Installation is scheduled for early 2023.

For this project, our clients wanted to refresh the landscape while keeping it true to the architecture. We were hired to create a full‑property master plan that included all new hardscaping—a redesigned front walk, a front sitting area, and a new backyard patio. Although the original concept featured natural stone throughout, pre‑costing revealed that concrete would be a more budget‑friendly choice while still supporting the design intent.

The front portion of the landscape carries a subtle Asian‑inspired influence, expressed through a segmented walkway and a sitting area set within stone mulch. The home’s distinctive angles are echoed throughout the design, both in the front yard and the backyard, creating a strong architectural connection.

In the expanded backyard patio, we created distinct outdoor rooms for lounging, dining, and gathering around a fire pit. New plantings wrap the perimeter of the home, blending long‑blooming perennials, ornamental grasses, evergreens, and flowering shrubs for year‑round interest and texture.

Low‑voltage landscape lighting completes the design, enhancing nighttime ambiance and extending the usability of the outdoor spaces.

Scheduled for installation in early 2023—check back for photos of the finished project.
