Mid-Century Front Landscape - Mequon, WI

This front‑yard transformation replaces outdated yew groupings with a fresh, modern planting design that brings structure, color, and year‑round interest to a Mequon, Wisconsin ranch home. Angled planting beds, layered perennials, ornamental grasses, and thoughtfully placed ornamental trees create a contemporary look, while a new shade garden beneath a mature maple adds depth and texture to the landscape.

As part of a complete front‑yard makeover for this ranch home, the traditional yew groupings were removed to make way for a more modern, dynamic landscape. To maintain evergreen structure through winter, new boxwood were planted along the foundation, providing a clean, year‑round backdrop for the rest of the design.

The client requested abundant seasonal color, so the refreshed planting beds feature a mix of perennials, ornamental grasses, and flowering shrubs. The overall concept embraces a contemporary aesthetic, with planting beds angled in relation to the home to create movement and visual interest. The existing front walk remained in place, and a well head was cleverly incorporated into one of the new beds, blending seamlessly into the design. Ornamental trees anchor key corners of the house, while deciduous shrubs form a layered backdrop for the colorful perennials and grasses.

A massive maple in the center of the yard offered the perfect opportunity for a large shade garden. The client expanded their hosta collection here, and we complemented it with structural shrubs and additional shade‑loving perennials to introduce texture, height, and seasonal variation.

The result is a fresh, modern landscape that enhances curb appeal, celebrates seasonal color, and makes thoughtful use of the property’s existing features.
